November Celebration: Seventeen Years Worth Crowe-ing About

In case you haven’t heard, alot of pretty enthusiastic Blue Haveners will be descending on Amarillo’s Ambassador Inn come this Novemer 15th. Now it could just be that they’ve all heard that Willard Tate will be speaking, or it could be that they’ve all tasted Amarillo beef before and just can’t get their fill, but more than likely it’s because they all have a few things to say to Vance and Aimee Crowe, things like “Thanks,” or “We love you,” or the ever popular “We’re sure gonna miss you!”

It was 1987 when Vance first stepped up to the CBH plate and Aimee filled it full of mouth-watering vittles. Since then, Blue Haven hasn’t been the same.

Let’s look at some of the plain facts. In 1987, CBH hosted 870 campers through its main summer sessions. Under Vance’s leadership that number soared to a whopping 1200 in just four years, and has remained consistently between 1100 and 1200 since. In fact, nearly half of all campers to ever attend Blue Haven attended during the Crowe years. The same can be said of all who were ever baptized at CBH.

Sure, Vance and Aimee would be the first to tell you that the success of Blue Haven is attributable first to God, and then to all of the counselors, teachers, board members, supporters and alumni who have “pitched in” over the years. But no one can argue that, when God needed powerful, faithful tools to work his will at Blue Haven, He reached for Vance and Aimee.

Most of the time and planning for the upcoming celebration have been put in by Philip and Tammy Camp, and if you have yet to make your reservations, you’ll need to contact them quickly. There are a limited number of plates and it’s sure to be a full house. The cost is $50 per plate and all proceeds go to the camp. It promises to be an evening full of wonderful memories presented by loving friends of the Crowes and of the camp, but it won’t be complete without you.

No, that’s not “Old Blue Eyes,” Frank Sinatra, about to break into another verse of I Did It My Way. That suave young man is our own Scotty Witt, circa 1957 or so, in a promotional shot for the newly established Camp Blue Haven. Still, most of us would probably agree that if Scotty hadn’t done it his way, it might not have gotten done!

Operations: What is Needed and Why

Thanks to many of you, the camp looks better than ever before. Our facilities have undergone a massive and overdue rejuvenation during the past few years. New roofs keep the rain off the heads of teachers and campers, new electric, water and septic systems keep us all safe and comfy, new expansions to our Challenge Course provide greater learning and recreation experiences for everyone involved. In short, if you haven’t seen all these renovations, you must find time to head up to camp. She’s in great shape!

There is, however, a less tangible side of camp—less tangible that is, unless you happen to notice first-hand that it’s slipping. “Operations” covers everything from light bills to food to staff salaries to garbage collection to gasoline in the camp pickup. No, the quality that Blue Haven has always provided isn’t slipping, it’s going nowhere but up. But “UP” takes funding.

It’s no secret that the Blue Haven board has always had as its primary goal to provide the best experience for campers, physically, mentally, socially and spiritually, for the lowest possible price. That’s what Blue Haven is about—making the Christian camping experience available to EVERYONE, regardless of their financial status. In truth however, the recent focus on necessary repairs and expansions has, perhaps, made all of us a little less aware of what it takes to actually keep it all running. We have found ourselves with a minor shortfall of operational funds. As stewards of the wonderful gifts we’ve received over the past few years, gifts earmarked for buildings, grounds or endowment, we cannot simply borrow from funds provided in good faith for other purposes. No, we must pursue gifts intended for operational costs.

The next few months are the “dry” months for CBH—no camp tuitions are coming in, and yet we still have the costs of maintaining, preparing and promoting for next summer. Won’t you consider a gift of a different kind to Blue Haven? A gift specified for “operations” may not result in a new roof, a new building or anything that you can touch with your hands, but when you provide the funds needed to keep things running, you’ll be reaching beyond our facilities to touch the hearts of the campers who will leave camp next summer, changed.
